Palestine is since yesterday an Observer Member in the United Nations. This vote lifted the veil on the real supports of Israel. Some preferred to abstain from the vote while others showed their supports to the Apartheid State of Israel.

Mauritius, Secularity, Dreams and Ideologies !

The debate is on since around 2 weeks on the various internet spaces where free speech is allowed about secularity in Mauritius Island. Many persons, specially those residing abroad, want to see Mauritius and that by the voice of the head of state to declare that it is a secular state and that all means will be used to make Mauritius a secular state. 

The debate could have passed unnoticed if the political landscape of our island wasn't in a big turmoil. On the one side we have the political parties trying to emerge with a new political system and ascribe their names in history as the ones who gave Mauritius it's 2nd Republic and on the other side we have those who want to bring down all the political parties who have been in power since independence and to put in a place a copy of the political system in France, US or Even India !. 

As times and events shape the reality of Mauritius, I cannot but think that what I thought at a time would be best for the Island has rapidly turned into something that could be a nightmare for the population. Yes, The people wants democracy, equality, justice, fairness and transparency but what if for the sake of this ideal.. of this ideology we bring down the less good ones for the worst !. This simple thought gives me the chills.

The Former President of Mauritius declared the following at the meeting of the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), I quote:

I could take the case of my own country, Mauritius, where pluralism and fundamental human rights are entrenched in the Constitution and where the concept of unity in diversity has, over the years, allowed the various ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious components of society to live together peacefully, not to say harmoniously. (1)

Gerhard Robbers in the Encyclopedia on World Constitutions points out the following on Mauritius:

All public authorities are bound to remain strictly neutral in their relations with religious communities and no one religion may be given any preferential treatment to another without violating anti-discriminatory provisions. (2)

We thus understand that our country is secular but is unique in the sense that all religious are treated on the same level rather than removing and banning everything than are linked to religions. It is thus normal for all Mauritius that National public holidays are based on many religious festivals. The religious accessories and other ornaments or cultural clothes are used on a daily basis and is considered to be normal for everyone. However, people from other places coming to Mauritius would probably find it quite strange for someone to wear the hijjaab ( head scarf for women) at the office. Well, this is practice here in Mauritius.

The religious commitments of all segments of the populations are taken into account such that everyone can live to the fullest his/her religious commitments while being Mauritian and participating in the building of the nation.

Nouveaux membres du PMSD ! belle farce !

Rien qu'a voire l'article et le bagage de cette nouvelle recrue du PMSD sur defimedia.info, je me demande bien de qui on se moque. Les femmes n'ont-elles pas le droit d'etre representer par quelqu'une de representatif au moins?. Les femmes qui travaillent ou qui sont femmes au foyer, C'est cette demoiselle la qui les representeront ?. Elle qui est parti pour l'angleterre pendant 5ans. Elle qui a maintenant 26ans, c'est dire le cinquieme de sa vie qu'elle a passe en angleterre. Toute une jeunesse loin des cieux du quadricolore. Cette jeunesse qu'elle dit vouloir defendre et voire s'epanouir, elle ne la connait meme pas. 

Deja elle n'a pas de degree universitaire pour exercer en temps que HRM !.. demain elle voudra quoi ?? Etre ministre peut-etre ?

Mais allons ! .. 

Elle n'a pas le profile d'une politicienne. Et encore moins d'une politicienne qui represent la jeunesse. Elle dit constater que les "politiciennes sont plus agressives sur le terrain que les hommes "- En politique on doit etre plus diplomatique pas agressive ! c'est pour cela que sarko avait gagner face a l'autre. Elle ne s'y connait en rien ! apart le business familiale de son pere ! elle contribuera quoi au parlement et au gouvernment ! ..

Come on ! prenez pas les mauriciens pour des bouffons ! .. Il n'y a plus personne qui devient membre du PMSD ou quoi ! .. 

Boodhoo, Cehl Meeah, Tsunamis et Independance Day !

The 11th of March 2011 is a day that will be remembered in history, and writing this article is my way of engraving it into history. Harish Boodhoo who was being called " L'homme fort de belle terre " is now mostly being referred in articles as the "Ex- Vice Prime Minister". This is not a mere coincidence. Most readers would not even pay attention to this insignificant change, but it does play with the brains of everyone unknowingly.. Because the media is trying to tell you that this man is no more "L'homme fort" but merely an Ex politician !..

Why such a change ? Simply because Harris Boodhoo has started doing meetings on political matters in order to make the population conscious of several scandals that is happening in our society. The meeting in front of Sun Trust building gathered 3000 persons within me and it was confirmed by Defimedia.info . This figure however is less than the actual audience who left the meeting mid-way in order to catch up with buses for those who live far away. 

Also present at the meeting of Harish Boodhoo were Salim Muthy, Georges Ah-Yan and Eddy Sadien who criticized ferociously the government and other parastatal bodies. Boodhoo denounced the alleged fraudulous transactions of Pravind Jugnauth and other scandals linked to the latter. He also took a minute to thank all the people who came for his meeting. He said that he has written to the ICAC and hopes Pravin Jugnauth is arrested by the coming Monday. Harish Boodhoo's next meeting is in front of the MBC-Tv malpropre at reduit on the 18th of March at 4pm. The man of belle terre also criticized the freemasonry brotherhood in Mauritius and suggested that a law should be promulgated like in Britain so that they declare their affiliation to the freemasonry society.

Cehl Meeah gets into the fight against corruption

Cehl Meeah has asked his followers to side with the truth that Harish boodhoo is unveiling and attend the meetings in order to stop any degradation of public order in the region. Many supporters of Cehl Meeah were at the Centre Goomany at P.Verte and in front of Sun trust Bldg for the meetings of harish boodhoo. Cehl Meeah made a public speech in which he criticized severely the government for not clearing the taxes of Rs450,000 on food containers he obtained as donations from abroad for the poor people of Port Louis. Most of which would have been sent to Roche Bois and Upper Valle Pitot which are the 2 main needy regions of Port Louis. He also commented on some information suggesting that Pravin Jugnauth obtained information on frauds of Rs5Billions of Navin Ramgoolam which has forced the latter to accept the MSM for an alliance in the 2010 elections. He further claimed that the "rodage" period at the parliament is over and he will start putting tough questions.The Leader of FSM aims to organize a march on the roads of Port Louis by the end of the month to protest against corruption.

Terrible Tsunamis and earthquakes in Japan

The earthquakes in Japan have given rise to Tsunamis which has washed across the coasts of Japan and inland yesterday. The buildings which were built to resist earthquakes perfomed marvellously well. However, the nuclear facilities of Japan were badly struck. One of them has leaks and the radiation is 1000 times above the normal around the site. The army has been sent to secure the zone and more than 30,000 persons have been asked to move away for their own security. 

Japan depends highly on nuclear power for electricity and the stock market dropped precipitously after the earthquake. The Nikkei will suffer a lot in the days to come. 

Independence Day !

43 years of independence from the british rulers. Maybe this is how it should be taken. We have changed from british colony to a colony of parties !. Parties which have not changed since the independence day in 1968. 

What a great independence day was it ?

For the 20 'ers and even 40'ers, little do we know about how Mauritius obtained independence. Only the 60'ers and above know really what happened at the time. Et encore ! For those who are die-hard of the parties, they would never admit what happened was a true farce. 56% only of the population agreed to Mauritius becoming independent at the time. Has this changed a lot since then ? 

Sir Abdool Razack Mohamed, the leader of the Muslim Comittee of Action (CAM), sided with MLP and IFB thus giving them a majority at the parliament. This gave rise to tensions between the muslim and creole communities as the latter supported Gaetan Duval and Jules Koenig lost the elections. 

My word:

Mauritius obtained its independence, that's a fact and we are all Mauritians now and we have to live as Mauritians. Their is no going back. But, we should fight for a true independence from the people who have seized all the political and decision taking powers since the elections of 1967. Mauritius needs a 3rd real political force and not an opposition which is sometimes with the government and sometimes against it. This game has been going on for the past 40 years and the parties have all been at one time or the other in the opposition. We need a government of the people which will uproot those corrupted personalities who are at the head of our institutions for decades. 

Could that 3rd force consist of Boodhoo, Meeah and Rama Valayden ?? and Party Malin?? :)

In an era, where people in France are carrying strikes against the increase in the no. of years to work, where people in USA are fighting for healthcare, the Chinese people which is definitely one of the most hardworking population in the world is showing all of us the way to success. 

Chinese talents are coming with innovations in all fields year after year and today they have shown without doubts that they built a 15 storey building in 48 hours and furnish it completely in 6 days. This kind of production system is one that all engineers tend to design in any fields they work in. After the flat packed furniture from china, in the years to come, maybe our buildings will come flat packed from china. With the prefab structures, there are no wastage of materials, or very less and one of the advantages of prefab is that you know exactly how it will look after. The structure of the building is able to resist level 9 earthquakes and is a pure engineering jewel. From the core of the structure to the finish. It is one of the most innovative buildings in the world. Our cyber-city tower which was crowned the most intelligent building is definitely not up to the level. Hopefully, companies in Mauritius will see the potential in this innovative engineering prowess of Chinese engineers and will be well advised to take it as a model of production efficiency.

Mauritius Villages become Cities!

The government's idea of converting villages to cities is not a bad idea in itself. But, It is important that the sole objective of the transformation of a village to a city status is not only to please the ego of the villagers. It is a well-known issue in Mauritius that people living in cities consider themselves a status above. And, eventually the people living in villages tend to feel that they are a class below. The problem of ego is one that people have learned to live with in Mauritius and do not even care about it nowadays. However, it remains in their sub-conscious that the people living in cities are better-off. 

Important Note before you continue reading: I might be criticized for my point of views, and many persons might be angry about my point of view. You can criticize me for the sake of not agreeing with me or for the simple reason of not feeling inferior/superior to your compatriots. Remember, I am only saying loud what others think low. 

Village / City differences are made only by Mauritians in the first place. Most foreigners coming to live in Mauritius, would choose G.Baie, Tamarin or Grand Gaube and they do not bother about living in Villages for the simple reason that back in their country of origin, our cities in Mauritius look smaller than their villages in France, England or Switzerland. I am not saying here that the same kind of mentality does not exist in those countries. I am only saying that those foreigners do not have this mentality when they come to Mauritius. The french people are known to have this kind of mentality where, for instance, a rich girl would not marry a peasant. I am talking here about the 60's and before. But this mentality still prevails in those countries too. 

The government's project is to have all those main villages turned into cities. I am not against it. But, I would rather tell you why this is not feasible or not worthwhile. First let's see what are the main characteristics of a city. 

I have listed below 20 characteristics of a city:

1. Compact forms of residential developments. e.g apartments ( PL,QB, CPE, RH-BB, VCS)
2. Mass transit transports, e.g taxi train, bus tiptop ( PL, QB, RH-BB, CPE)
3. Inbound and Outbound traffic, e.g mass movements into/ out of cities ( PL, RH, QB, CPE)
4. Corporate HQs' of Multinationals, e.g IBM, Corporate & Chancery Group ( PL, CPE, QB)
5. Financial Services, e.g Stock market, Banking outlets (PL, CPE, QB, RH, VCS)
6. Participation in International Events , e.g journée des droits de l'homme, .. ( PL, CPE, QB, RH)
7. Diverse demographic constituencies. (PL, CPE, QB, RH-BB)
8. International and Regional familiarity/ popularity. (PL, QB, CPE)
9. Presence of Cultural points / Memorials / Museums.(PL, CPE, QB, BB-RH)
10. Array of Educational Institutions, more than 5 Schools / Colleges / Tertiary Education (all 5)
11. Sporting Community and Events (all 5)
12. Presence of historical background, e.g symbolic actions, references, strikes... (PL, CPE, BB-RH)
13. Advanced communication Infrastructures e.g Wifi spots, Wimax, ADSL (all 5) 
14. Skyscrapers. 
15. Libraries, Hospitals, Police Station, Fire station, Waste services, Sewage Network (tout à l'egout)
16. Large / Small public Spaces e.g foodcourts, public gardens, green spaces. 
17. Employment based mainly on Education and Skills. 
18. Cities have suburbs, downtown. 
19. Buildings of different ages, Media attraction for documentary purposes, Higher Land Taxes
20. Main Roads, cities should have atleast 4 main roads.. and Shops that open onto the sidewalk and not parking slots.

Ofcourse, one could say that we, Mauritians, are the most intelligent population around the world and we will be making Cities that are the best. I can tell you already, that you will only be boosting the ego of the inhabitants of the villages and your village will remain a village and not become a city with the simple change of rank. Because yes, the change of village to city is not a mere change of name. It is the elevation in rank. Whether, this accompanies more prestige to the place or pride to the inhabitants up to you to decide.

For a village to develop into a city, it will inevitably have to obtain all the characteristics listed above. Some of our cities are not worthwhile to be called as such. I will take the only example of Vacoas/Phoenix. Merging 2 big concentration of residential places does not make a city. The government should provide the Vacoas/Phoenix with a Point of Concentration where most of the services are centralized within the city. This is what a city is in the end. A place where you can have all your different procedures done in one place. It is like a huge shopping mall. 

The decentralization of main governmental bodies from the cities would only make it more difficult and more costly for documents/ persons to go from one ministry to another, from one department to another. And this would definitely add to the cost of operations. The transport problems to link to the main cities should be solved. We should not attack a problem by changing its place. The problem is a transport problem. We need more roads. Build more roads, that's it. The solution is simple. But discussing too much on a simple problem, brings us to solutions that have got nothing to do with the problem. The current solution of ring road and construction is a good start within, the government should focus on that. 

Ofcourse, after reading my article, you are probably guessing which villages should become cities within me. My future cities are as follows and in that order:

1. Mahebourg - Harbour, centralized region for the south, market place, food court, mass transit transports (read the 20 points to know what I mean by that), suburbs, airport nearby and included as part of Mahebourg, Historical heritage of Mauritius, Museum, green space, colleges, schools, .. 
2. G.Baie - Harbour, centralized region for the north, Commercial avenues, food courts, sewage and advanced communications infrastructure, cultural diversity, Corporate and Organization HQs, marketplace, green space, suburbs (can include Pointe aux cannoniers and Pereybere as suburbs). 
3. Flacq - centralized region for the east, regional shopping center, suburbs, food courts, cultural diversity, green space, ..

My list is a lot shorter than the list of the government. But this list is more reasonable and  contains villages that could become successful cities beyond the mere change of name to boost the ego of the inhabitants.

MBC or CBC ? Mauritius Tv

MBC (Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation) or CBC (Cultural Broadcasting Channels) ? The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporating has launched 6 more channels putting forward the cultural diversity of the country. We are here talking about the Mauritius Tv.

Tv- A big T for Tele ! and Small v for Vision. The MBC lacks vision. Some questions which are left unanswered!

• Apart from the doordarshan channels which we already had, what was the need to add more doordashan channels ?
• Is there such a demand for cultural channels ?
• Has there been a survey by the MBC asking the MBC viewers the kind of channel they would want to have ?
• Has there been a proper market research ?
• If yes, what are the results of the Market Research ? 
• On what figures has the MBC based itself to determine the languages that represent each segment of the population ?
• Is Arabic not spoken as much as Mandarin in Mauritius ?

So many question marks that give a very bad image to MBC Tv. A lack of vision that has tarnished the image on the regional scene. If all the cultures are now represented by individual channels why do we still have the cultural shows on mbc 1, mbc 2, mbc 3 and movies channel.
Why don't they put all hindi films on the channels broadcasting in hindi language?.
Why don't they put all urdu films and series on the channel broadcasting in urdu?
I could go on the like that..
What channel represent a large minority or majority of Mauritians who enjoy European and American shows / Films ?
Mauritians are fond of American / French / English movies, why are we not given a channel for those kind of movies / series ?
So many why ! So many question marks !
One of the important questions is definitely why have they chosen an urdu channel rather than an Arabic channel ?.

Who are those persons who lobby for the urdu against the arabic language ? This is very bad. Muslims go on pilgrimmage to Saudi Arabia, they should learn arabic, and indeed a large segment of the muslims know talking arabic. The quran is written in arabic. The muslims are learning or will definitely learn arabic to understand well their religion. Someone with 'vision' would see that their would indeed be a demand for a channel in Arabic language in the years to come. But someone with no 'vision' can also see yesterday. I understand however that it might not be easy to forecast demand for tomorrow. But, what is the trend today?.

If I can agree to the fact that for the liberty of everyone, it is the right of everyone to have a channel broadcasting in their cultural language. But it is very important that the right of the children of today are not sacrificed for the sake of cultural diversity. The children of today should be exposed to the western world, be fluent in english, french, if possible mandarin, arabic, spanish, russian and hindi. But, the culture of asians are changing, they are themselves following European and American culture. They are going towards the Western way of living. While, we are moving towards the eastern way of living. We should understand and learn to balance our society such that we can take benefits of the goods of each side and not end up with garbage.
